The storied WA travel destination goes from strength to strength with its world-class food and wine, laid back lifestyle and wonderful natural attractions.

Recognised as one of Australia’s best known wine regions, Margaret River is also one of the country’s top holiday destinations. The laidback lifestyle and untouched beauty of the ocean and forests attracts visitors from across Australia and the world year-round.

From the aquamarine waters of Geographe Bay in the north, down the ancient cave-carved Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge, through the picturesque vineyards and karri forest of the heartland, to the desolate beauty of Cape Leeuwin in the south, this is a place of splendid natural contrasts. Surrounded by water on three sides, the ocean forms the life rhythms of the land between the capes, its many moods governing everything from the lovely climate to the subtle nuances of another world-beating vintage.

The journey south along the western coastline brings you the international surfing paradise of Margaret River with its legendary breaks.

The town is 10 kilometres up river and is home to fine restaurants and cafes, and a diverse community of artists and creative people. The beautiful limestone caves are nearby and attract many thousands of visitors each year.

At the southern tip of the region is the town of Augusta, just nine kilometres from where the Indian and Southern Oceans meet. This is Flinders Bay and is well-known for whale sightings in the winter months.

While the backbone of the Margaret River Wine Region’s wine industry is its cabernet sauvignon, the area is also renowned for making some of the country’s best chardonnay. Other varieties that have attracted worldwide acclaim include semillon, sauvignon blanc, merlot and shiraz. Before setting out on a tasting trip, it is worth paying a visit to the Wine Tourism Showroom, located in the Margaret River Visitor Centre. Featuring sensory displays and fascinating wine making equipment, this centre is the perfect place to get a few tips from the locals.
