Home to Australia’s oldest wine region, Swan District is a charming combination of history, superb wines and culinary delights.
With its close proximity to the city and enviable position along the banks of the Swan River, the Swan Valley is one f the most popular visitor destinations in Western Australia.
The Valley is also the traditional heartland of the Swan District with its numerous old wineries, wonderful ethnic diversity and eclectic selection of superb restaurants and cafés. It also takes the prize as Australia’s oldest wine growing area with the first vines planted in 1829. The best way to enjoy the region is by following the 32km Swan Valley Food and Wine Trail (visit www.swanvalley.com.au for further information). An organised wine tasting tour or a wine cruise up the Swan River (leaving from Perth) are both also relaxing and memorable ways to visit the wineries and eateries, as well as view the wonderful heritage buildings and charming natural surroundings.
The region’s best loved varieties include verdelho, chardonnay, chenin blanc, shiraz and cabernet sauvignon. Lesser known varieties include the delicious Petit Verdot, Tempranillo, Pedro Ximenez and Navera. The district also boasts over 70 restaurants and cafés offering everything from wholesome home cooking to gold plate-winning cuisine.
