Just a quick drive from the city the delightful Perth Hills offer award-winning boutique wineries, great country restaurants and plenty to do.

With its winding roads, rolling hills and quaint early settler hamlets, there is no better place for a scenic drive than the Perth Hills. The city is a mere 30kms distant so this beautiful location is the perfect spot for a day trip or weekend getaway.

The area not only produces popular grape varieties like semillon, verdelho, chenin blanc, cabernet sauvignon, shiraz and merlot, but also boasts excellent examples of viognier and tempranillo. Yet it is not just the wine that is surprisingly sophisticated: the country restaurants are first-class and there are a number of luxurious accommodation options, plus a spa retreat for those in need of a truly relaxing break.

If you’re feeling a little energetic there are more than 40 walking and riding trails winding through 10 national parks. You can find out about the local flora and fauna at the Perth Hills National Parks Centre in Mundaring, while Armadale is home to the magnificent Araluen Botanic Park.

Things to know about Perth Hills

The Perth Hills is a pristine oasis right on the eastern edge of the Perth metropolitan area. The climate is cooler here due to its elevation and hence it has been a traditional getaway spot for savvy West Australians for generations. Given almost a third of the region comprises national parks and bush reserves, it’s not surprising that this is one of the best bush walking and camping areas in Australia. However, if it’s vibrant wines and superbly prepared local produce that takes your fancy, then a visit to Perth is not complete if you don’t head for the hills!

• The first vineyard was planted in Darlington in the1880s.

• Mundaring holds a village market on the first Saturday of every month.

When Araluen Botanic Park opened in 1929 it was a holiday camp.

• The Perth Hills has three wine trails – the Chittering Valley, Bickley Valley and Mundaring wine trails.

• You can feed kangaroos and hold a koala at one of the local fauna parks.

• Who doesn’t love fresh seasonal fruit? You can pick your own at one of the various orchards.
