Peel

A wine and food adventurer’s dream come true from the sparkling Indian Ocean to the valleys and dales of the Darling Range.   Known as the Gateway to the South, Peel is emerging as one of the State’s most exciting wine regions and its wineries are best known for shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, merlot, verdelho and chenin blanc.   As for choosing activities to work up that appetite, Peel is full of surprises. Head north to Serpentine National Park and soak up the scenery in the calming waters of the stunning Serpentine Falls, or you may prefer to explore the area’s dense forests by horseback. While the Darling Range provides many spots perfect for a relaxing picnic of local produce and a chilled bottle, Peel also has plenty on offer for those craving a bit more action. The Bibbulmun Track is a must for avid bushwalkers, and for cyclists there is the Munda Biddi Bike Trail. The Waroona Dam and Lake Navarino are both ideal for canoeing and water-skiing, but if it’s a bit of retail therapy you’re after, head into Waroona and find a souvenir at the art galleries or antique shops before finishing up in one of the local cafés. Things to know about the Peel region.   Situated 45 minutes south of Perth, Peel has always been a hot spot for first-rate market garden produce and a utopia for keen fishermen. The largest city in the area is lively Mandurah, undoubtedly one of Australia’s most exciting and attractive regional centres. With several major river systems, the Peel Inlet and the Indian Ocean, there is an abundance of crabs, prawns and fish year round in the area. It is home to stunning beaches, pristine bushland and several of the State’s most charming and historic early settler townships.
